Microsoft is launching a new “Console Purchase Pilot” program that will offer selected Xbox Insider members the chance to register in order to book an Xbox Series X or Series S gaming console directly from the company through their existing Xbox One gaming consoles.
The latest program is only rolling out in the USA right now, and even if you are provided the chance to sign up, it doesn’t mean that you’ll actually be shortlisted to buy one of the highly in-demand consoles.
This scheme will also require the user to use the Xbox Insider Hub app on an Xbox One console to both sign up for the Console Purchase Pilot and buy the console itself — you won’t be able to lead the transaction on a PC, Xbox 360, web browser, or Xbox Series X / S by design.
It means that the scheme will be intentionally focused on dedicated Xbox lovers who already own an Xbox One gaming console and are thinking to upgrade, and it could help cut down on scalpers. The Xbox Insider scheme, introduced in 2016, lets dedicated Xbox fans give upright feedback to Microsoft and examine future software updates and features ahead of wider public rollouts.
And with next-generation consoles supposed to be hard to find in stocks for months to come — at its last update, Microsoft said to look forward to the new Xboxes to be difficult to buy until at least June — testing out new routes to directly sell gaming consoles to fans could be the best way to ensure that more units don’t end up on the eBay aftermarket.
