Find and Install TPM 2.0 Module on Windows PC

Recently, Microsoft released Windows 11 into the world with some new and great features. The Windows 11 stable version will come for people in the late fall. But these new features have a few prerequisites that your system has to fulfill for the free transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

There is one important thing, in particular, that is making people confused and it is TPM 2.0. Everyone is asking all sorts of different questions about it. For instance, do they have a TPM 2.0 chip? What is TPM 2.0? Do they need a TPM module for Windows 11? How to install TPM 2.0 on Windows? We have all these answers here in one place so, don’t worry we are going to clear all your doubts. Now, let’s dive in and get to know about TPM 2.0 together.

What is TPM 2.0?

The full form of TPM is Trusted Platform Module. TPM is a hardware module that comes into use when your system requires a secure boot and also during checking your system integrity. TPM also comes in use of the Windows operating system for file and disk encryption along with BitLocker.

Check/Change TPM status and Version

It is quite easy to check if you have a TPM module. Press Win+R to open the Run prompt and then type tpm.msc. After that press on OK.

It will take you to the TPM management page where you can see your TPM status. For us, the status was “The TPM is ready to use”. If you want to check the TPM version, you can do that too as it appears at the bottom under TPM manufacturer information.

Also, if your TPM module status is off, you have to activate it again using the UEFI firmware settings menu. The option of activating the TPM module is different for every laptop as it mostly depends on the manufacturer. But you can find the TPM option under Security or Advanced settings usually.

Does My Motherboard Have a TPM Header?

You don’t have to worry about the TPM Header if your computer doesn’t have a TPM chip. Because almost all the motherboards have a TPM header and you can easily install a TPM module manually. Also, if you are not sure that your motherboard has a TPM header then you can check it by going to the motherboard’s manufacturing site. All you have to do is Google your motherboard’s serial number and check all the technical specs on the manufacturer’s site.

How to Install TPM 2.0 Module

If your computer has a TPM header, then you can easily upgrade to get a 2.0 module for your motherboard. Once you get the TPM 2.0 it will make your computer compatible with Windows 11.

But the tough part is finding the TPM 2.0. You need to get the exact PIN and pin layout of your motherboard’s TPM header. Let us give you an example if the manual says it has a 14-1 PIN header with the PIN layout. Then you have to buy a 14-1 PIN TPM 2.0 module.

In conclusion, you have to be cautious when you buy the TPM module. It should have the same PIN layout as your TPM header. But also, more importantly, it should have the same PIN lockout. For us, the TPM module has a lockout PIN in the 5th row, and you can check yours too.

Note: We recommend you buy the same TPM module from the same manufacturer as your motherboard manufacturer.

Conclusion:

Don’t worry, as we have told you earlier that most of the computers already had TPM 2.0 installed on their motherboard. But if your computer is without the TPM chip, it is very easy to buy one online. You can install it by yourself, or you can take it to a computer repair shop and get it installed.PublishedAugust 4, 2021
