E-Learning: Pros and Cons of the Future Learning

E-Learning is the new normal during this pandemic. COVID-19 pandemic requires new online education and training methods. For some, this is a minor change, but for others, it is an entirely new way of learning. The majority of countries have already implemented e-learning in their educational institutions. With different degrees of success, several Indian schools have adapted to the new normal of e-learning. Many advanced schools had already done a lot to promote technology use in their classrooms, which aided in the rapid and successful transition to entirely online instruction delivery during the current crisis. More than 92 percent of students and parents expressed satisfaction with the online delivery of classes in a recent poll done by us.

With the introduction of Covid19, e-learning appears to be one of the safest and simplest methods for imparting education for obtaining new skills, exploring new career alternatives, or even developing new hobbies. E-learning is currently used to conduct extracurricular activities for students and online educational sessions, online conferences, and webinars. The demand for e-learning has increased dramatically and will continue to do so as society adjusts to the effects of the pandemic’s “social distance.”

E-learning, like most educational modalities, has advantages and disadvantages. Understanding these will aid in the development of strategies for more effective lesson delivery and measurement.

Here are some important advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages

  • Efficiency

E-learning is a time-saving method of delivering education. At the touch of a button, you may use films, provide resource links, and administer assessment tests. The lectures can also be videotaped and shared with a wide range of people for future reference. It also enables the instruction of a considerably larger number of pupils.

  • Affordability

When compared to traditional learning, e-learning is far less expensive. E-learning largely saves money by removing two big expenses: real estate and transportation. All teaching and learning materials are available online and can be accessed at any time.

  • Less absenteeism

Students are less likely to miss classes because they can access them at any time from the comfort of their own homes.

  • Increased Access & Reach

E-learning can take place anywhere, where there is a device and internet access. In a physical class, the student must attend class. However, in this mode, the student can access teachings from anywhere in the world.

  • Encourages shy kids

Many children who are typically introverted in a classroom setting have shown to open up in online lessons. Their questions and participation are significantly more forthcoming. This could be due to a pleasant home environment.

Challenges

  • Not appropriate for all

It is widely known that kids have a preferred learning style. Some are visual, while others are auditory, tactile, and so on. E-learning, which needs a child to sit in front of a screen and grasp the lesson, may not be appropriate for all types of learners.

  • Lack of Focus

During virtual lectures, some students tend to lose focus for longer periods. Boredom is easy to come by because there isn’t much face-to-face engagement. It is critical for professors to keep their online sessions short and interactive to ensure that pupils understand everything.

  • Technology issues

While India’s internet coverage has increased in the last year, the current infrastructure, particularly in smaller areas, might be a concern. Any disruption in data connectivity can result in a lack of continuity in the child’s learning, which can be harmful. Furthermore, a child that is technophobic may have difficulty learning.

  • Lack of social interaction

Humans can learn a lot just by being among other people. Regrettably, e-learning eliminates all physical interactions between students and teachers on school grounds. It is usually preferable for students to be in the company of other students to talk about or discuss concepts, which is an important aspect of learning. Peer learning is unquestionably harmed.

  • Teacher training

E-learning necessitates that teachers be tech-savvy, which is not always the case. Teachers must devote more time to keeping up with the latest technological advancements to conduct their online classes smoothly.

  • Manage Screen time

The hazards of looking at a screen for long periods may lead to weaker eyesight, prolonged headaches, and many more.

While all types of learning have advantages and disadvantages, it seems certain that some form of blended learning will emerge as a result of the current crisis, with e-learning playing a critical role in the whole teaching-learning process.
