Android’s Nearby Share is the New Android Sharing Feature Similar to Apple’s AirDrop

After waiting for a long time, Android finally launched its own sharing version similar to Apple’s AirDrop. Android’s sharing feature is called Nearby Share, you can now share files quickly without installing any third-party app.

In order to use a file-sharing app, you have to give it several permissions which could be harmful, but things are different from Google’s own sharing app. Here you don’t have to install and don’t need to give it deep permissions since they can track your data. Most probably this new Nearby Share feature on Android will be risk-free, and Google will add more security features if anything is missing.

Nearby Share is a new sharing feature that is easy to access. Numerous developers and users have tested this feature, and Google launched after getting proper results. Its sharing speed and connectivity is fantastic. Similar to the AirDrop feature, it will also be the default feature for sharing local files.

Nearby Share uses both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology to transfer data from one end to the other. You can share your documents, photos, web links, videos and many more things seamlessly. Apart from it, you can just upload your photos to a cloud space and get them directly on any device you want by logging in to your account.

Nearby Share is a new feature, but it works on older Android versions such as Android 6.0 and above. Nearby Share is not for iPad, iPhone or Mac devices since it is only available for Android devices. The chance of getting this feature on Apple devices is pretty low because AirDrop is also restricted to only Apple devices only.

If you have both older and latest Android version devices, then you might see some differences in menus on both devices. However, it will not affect the connectivity and speed, and you’ll be able to share content at a similar speed.

To access the Nearby Share feature, you must keep the Bluetooth and Location turned on. To turn on the Nearby Share feature, open Settings and move into Google>Device connections and press the Nearby Share feature.

If you want others to see a unique device name, you should open the Device name section and type your preferred device name. So while sharing a file, another connected device will have your newly added name. You can share files using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi networks, but if you don’t have it, you can even share in fully offline mode.

Before starting to share any file, you must scan the nearby devices. To make things easier while scanning and make device visibility easy to find, choose All Contacts. Selecting the All Contacts option will let your contact persons see your device for sharing data if it is in range. You can also choose some specific people to share files with. This feature will keep your device’s location and network addresses secure.

However, if you don’t want anyone to find you, you can set the visibility option to Hidden. By setting up the Hidden option, no one will be able to find you. In this situation, no once can request to connect with you, but you can and find someone to get connected. Once both Android devices will be connected successfully, it will appear on the device.

Whatever security option you choose, no one can transfer or receive files without permission. For sharing files you’ll have to give command of Start Sharing. While receiving a file, you’ll have to choose Receive File to start receiving files from the connected device. You won’t receive any file which you didn’t select.

The Nearby Shear feature will appear when you begin with the standard sharing option. Based on your Android version, you might see a Nearby or a Nearby Share option. If you don’t see any of these options, just press the More button to check if the feature is available or not.

Once both devices are connected successfully, you can select any file to start sharing. Before receiving any file, you’ll be asked whether you want to receive this file on your Android device or not. While the sharing is ongoing, you can minimize the sharing tab and do something else. The sharing will stay active in the background.

Conclusion The process of enabling and disabling the Nearby Share feature is pretty simple. However, users don’t have to go into the Nearby Share especially because it will appear at the top when selecting the share button over any file. But if anyone wants to share multiple files, they have to manually turn on the Nearby Share section.
